As ordinary classroom teachers who aspire to be the future school heads, we should be aware of our duties and obligations and the public’s expectations from us. Some conflicts arise when we don’t understand the functions of each other. To understand and agree on priorities we should also consider our principals’ roles, functions, and responsibilities based on NCBSSH.
Their effective leadership is the core of every successful school. They collaborately create a vision and establish a climate for teacher, non-teaching personnel and learners in order to reach their highest level of achievement.
They set high standards and create high expectations for learners at the same time recognizing their achievement. They develop the skills and talents of those around them. They nurture and support their learning community on their continuous growth and development.
They engage in shared decision making with the community in achieving universal participation, completion and functional literacy, ensuring that other stakeholders are involved in raising learners’ performance. They manage the implementation and monitoring of their schools’ improvement and implementation plan.
And most importantly, they are the model of professionalism and moral and ethical leadership. They see to enforce the development of pride in the nobility of the teaching profession. When it comes to every decision, their foremost consideration shall always be for the learners’ welfare.
Now that we know, are we prepared to accept the challenge and be one of the future school leaders of the country?
